Mayan (Guatemala 1981-1983)

This Genocide took place in Guatemala. It took place from 1981 to 1983. The groups involved were the Mayan Indians and the Guatemala armyThe Guatemalan army believed that the Mayan Indians were trying to set up a communist group that would take over their government. Their fear lead to attacking Mayan villages, killing their livestock and poisoning their water supply in order to wipe them out. About 200,000 Mayans were killed in those years of attacking. This war eventually ended because of some interference of  the UN. The Guatemalan Government was feeling threatened by the  Mayans and felt the need to destroy them in order to maintain their control of the nation. The Mayans population had been dramatically decreased and destroyed any time of nationalism they had for the time being.
